Otters were hunted from traders for their thick and luxurious pelts. By the year 1990, otters were nearly extinct. Otters find prey along rocky shores, on sandy seafloors and estuaries. Many kinds of prey live among the kelp. Otters actually help the kelp to thrive by eating sea urchins. Otters eat many kinds of invertebrates, including snails, crabs, clams, squids, sea stars, sea urchins, abalones and octopuses.
